Eyedeal IOLs Bring Light to African Cataract Patients — 2025 Chinese Volunteer Doctors’ Medical Aid Campaign Launches in Ethiopia

The 2025 Chinese Volunteer Doctors’ Medical Aid Campaign was recently launched in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The opening ceremony was attended by Ethiopian President Taye, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai, Ethiopian Minister of Health Mekdes, government officials, business leaders, representatives from local hospital administrations, as well as more than 30 Chinese volunteer doctors and support staff.

On the first day after arrival, the team conducted nearly 100 free consultations and successfully performed six cataract surgeries, using intraocular lenses (IOLs) manufactured by Xi’an Eyedeal Medical Technology Co., Ltd. The project leader stated that as a leading Chinese enterprise in polymer medical materials and IOL technology, Xi’an Eyenable actively responds to public welfare initiatives and embraces the Belt and Road vision. By providing high-quality, innovative Chinese medical products, the company aims to bring light to more patients suffering from eye diseases across Africa.

The surgeries in this campaign used Eyenable® hydrophobic acrylic aspherical IOL — the company’s fourth-generation implantable medical device, independently developed in China. Weighing approximately 20 milligrams and with a 6.0 mm optical diameter, the lenses are designed for micro-incision implantation. Featuring a unique low-negative-spherical-aberration optical design, the lenses offer greater depth of focus compared to traditional aspherical IOLs, significantly enhancing patients’ night vision while delivering both extended depth of field and superior visual quality, along with exceptional long-term stability.

Over the next two weeks, the Chinese volunteer medical team will perform more than 100 additional surgeries, host multiple academic lectures, and travel to other provinces to provide free medical services. These efforts will further strengthen medical cooperation between the two nations and jointly build a “Health Silk Road.” The campaign is expected to benefit more than 500 people in total.
